Joseph, the way to reliably answer your question is to have a pre-existing app in the market, and use Analytics to get specific data surrounding your own user base

of course this requires picking a minimum and maximum API to support first, before you launch

if you're targetting somewhere outside of USA / Europe, you're probably going to want to pay some company to gather the data for you, but the amount of... pickiness.. you're giving to the generic / non-specific answers that Dave has already given indicates you probably want a degree of specificity that isn't available to anyone (or Google at best)
