OK, on a quest to understand SO culture, (I sometimes read meta though) I noticed some answers that wouldn't be acceptable for a million years on other SEs remain untouched here, or sometimes even upvoted. So how do you guys differentiate between a link-only answer and an answer that contains a link?

Even posting duplicate link only answers is not spam. Its only spam if the user is affiliated with it and does not disclose that.

@TinyGiant I understand what you mean but that argument doesn't hold. How do you prove that a poster is affiliated with a product? Unless you have some data on their profile or a written contract, you can't. It's a legal matter that's not to be solved by us as a community. Most of the crap detected by Smokey doesn't show any affiliation. If a user posts multiple times the same text promoting a product or service, whatever it may be (library, crème de jouvence, tutorial, ...), then it is spam.
