you only need a reference returned by document.createElement("button")

Chrome does not respect different display values for label in an input

I don't know if it's Chrome or all Webkit browsers (even though Chrome is not Webkit anymore, it's still based on it)

You can make the label as another HTML element and use position to place it where a label would normally be placed

but then it isn't associated with the input in the markup

<label> is not just text, it's the equivalent of <a> for form elements. you don't put just text in <a> is it? same for <label>

in fact it has similar restrictions, a <label> can't contain another <label>, same as <a> can't contain another <a>

in fact we can even consider it completely redundant with <a>
