can anyone answer why the proto evaluates to object?

__proto__ points to the underlying object.

prototype points to its properties

in your case the underlying object is an Object object

so proto points to the 'top of the chain' object?

function Point(x, y) {

myPoint.__proto__.__proto__ == Object.prototype
myPoint instanceof Point;

no, b/c the constructor is assigning myPoints prototype to Point.prototype
