@McAdam331 I don't think you need to keep reference to SQLiteDatabase

because Helper will stash it as long as it can

that is, it keeps a private field mDatabase as a part of the object, and when you call getReadableDatabase/getWritableDatabase it will first check if that field is null and if it isn't is it open. If so, it will just return that field
