The largest problem facing the site today is the flood of terrible questions coming in, mostly from new user accounts. I've mentioned this before, but I suspect that some of the worst of this is due to people who have created multiple throwaway accounts to evade question bans and other limits. Ot...

So, somehow my provisioning script screwed up after going to bed last night and my 200 EC2s I spun up for a test stayed up for 24 hours. Awesome... this bug just cost me $80
note to self do not put EC2 instances provisioned for a test in the same autoscale group as the rest of your cluster.
@NikiC Does the existing proposal actively prevent that from being fixed in the future in some way that I'm missing? Return type inference would be really awesome but I don't see any way in which it would conflict with the current proposal?

bleh I'm adding packages.dotdeb.org to /etc/apt/sources.list and can see all the packages I ask for are there but I can't locate/install some of them via apt-cache search
@DaveRandom yes ... and if implemented as a run-time check it may have further repercussions due to how exactly one could realize such a runtime check without modifying the function directly
@NikiC If the proposal dropped return type support, would you vote in favour then? (I realise you are probably sick of discussing/explaining this but I'm really struggling with this one)
@Saitama You just need to phpize the extension to generate a configure script and then you should be able to configure/make
@Wes run it through unicode mode instead, doesn't even need a proper regex
@DaveRandom Not sure on that ... problem is that I'm not sure about semantics with return types, but without return types the proposal would feel incomplete
@NikiC While I agree with this, I can't help feeling like this is one of those things that if it fails the first time it will fail repeatedly and either we'll never get it or end up with a compromise that pleases no-one. I saw what you said yesterday about other languages and it's a completely legit argument, except for the fact that the way those languages work is with type inference, which they are able to do because they have strongly typed variables.
I just can't see any other way we could do it - you can't let the function execute and throw up at the point where it returns an invalid value because that could have side effects and might fail inconsistently, and you can't automagically infer return types from non-constant values because PHP. (although you could infer from return 42 etc, which would be fine and still useful for this particular case)
