debugging, have you tried searching for the problem ? If it was working in the beginning then try to remember what you have changed.
But if it's a permission error, try to check if you're blocking using vhost or htaccess

@JoeWatkins I got a skeleton that compiles but when I try and make it do anything useful I fail miserably. I actually managed to achieve a small chunk of what I'm trying to do by modifying PECL HTTP, so now I need to understand exactly what the existing code does that I modified (all I really did what add an arg to a userland function) and avoid the temptation to borrow the existing code.

@JoeWatkins I'd quite like to make my code do something before I put it on git, although if I haven't managed to by the end of the day I'll probably gist it. So far I've got as far as registering a function and returning different static strings based on the arguments (i.e. a skeleton of an extension) but I need to pull some environment vars (that's where I'm trying to work with the zend API), then parse a string into a data structure and do stuff with it (which I'm pretty certain I can do).

I've already implemented what I want to do in PHP so I know precisely what I want to achieve in terms of the logic. I'd really like to do as much of it as possible by myself though, I want to make sure I understand precisely what every single line of it does

The longer term goal is to write a better set of native HTTP tools for PHP, as a supporting extension for Aerys, the message parsing an processing is currently a massive bottleneck

@Leri Exactly, it no longer relies on short tags so you can actually use it in your code in 5.4+. Previously it was basically useless because it was not portable, and required an option to be enabled that breaks other stuff

@brodster Your first code sample has the right idea IMO (templating instead of building a string and echoing it) - focus on converting the bottom code so that it uses HTML literals instead of the echo, and once you've made that work the answer will become apparent.
