the place was 20 minutes from where I lived, but the trains were only once per hour, plus another 40mins of travelling on each end, so it could end up being the entire afternoon/evening for a 10-minute meeting.

So, I've been playing some Banished recently. It's great now. It has a modding API and there's a number of cool mods that add a lot of stuff.

I recommend the "Colonial Charter" mod. Basically doubles the amount of things you can build.
