Can someone explain why this returns 1? I would expect this to fail.

Hum, maybe this is the key:

> The preceding item will be matched _zero_ or more times.
(this is in reference to the * quantified)

What I'm trying to do is deconstruct some (foreign) code and understand why something isn't working. Using r* seems odd to me.
