I'd like to edit it way down to remove a lot of extraneous code and info and just leave a concise description plus a concise code example.

@Tex since your edit would appear in the suggested edits review queue, it's highly unlikely that a rewrite would be accepted.

Once you have more than 2000 rep, you can do such things but you should be very careful not to accidentally remove relevant information.

ok, I think the specific question touches on an interesting subject, but has way too much extraneous info and code.
