I need to load the next part of a form based on the selection a user makes in the first drop down and would like to avoid a button press.

Can somebody help me really quick, I'm seriously stuck. I'm trying to append and then change the css of `<span />` in `<li>`. But the css should be changed only if the `<li>` doesn't have the class `.menu_active`. So my first idea is this: `...$('<span />').filter('parent(li:not(.menu_active))').css(...`. But of course this is not working. What am I doing wrong?
the idea is, that I dont want the margin-top: -45 to be applied for the li.menu_active .. or it wont be red.. i could do this in the css, by using !important, however that is not very dynamic
