As opposed to learning Directx or not learning graphics at all?

Well I can't say I know DirectX all that much, but both have many concepts in common so once you know one you can pretty easily migrate to the other. As far as is it worth learning, I guess that depends how much you like doing 3D stuff. I'm kinda biased because that's what I want to work in so...

I have to warn you though, debugging 3d stuff is pretty much a pita =/

the C API would probably make you quit (although, theres apparently this C++ wrapper thing thats pretty nice, I've yet to try it)

I've made C++ wrappers of a lot of C things

It's pretty easy for the most part.

I made one for SDL a while back lol
