sounds like maybe your CSS file isn't being referenced properly in your <head> then?

where are you linking your CSS file?
you have to link the CSS file in a <head> element for any of the CSS to apply

hmm... dont know how to do it. looking at ur example it works with the same html inside.
i mean in ur example it works. in mine doesn't.
how come your code works there without linking CSS?

JSFiddle is designed that way so that you don't have to use <html>, <head>, <body> etc
but in a normal HTML file served on a server somewhere (or on your own computer), you have to use <head><link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="path to your CSS file here" /></head>
