However, for a certain footnote, which is NOT DIRECTLY COMING AFTER any other footnote, this CSS is applied as well. Strange.

Vincent, your example doesn't make much sense to me. Obviously, if you put an empty a after the word "test", everything you put in the content property will appear after the word test

if you want it to show up before, you'd have to wrap the word in the a tag
