@Terry don't hate. jQuery is a useful thing. Its just a shame people sometimes don't know how to use it, or how it works.

@mikedidthis oh, no. I'm not hating jQuery. I'm just scared of the devotion some people have to using it. Like I said early, I've been attacked on SO for not wanting to use jQuery on projects.

@Terry if you understand javascript, it can be great tool for getting stuff done. But again its preference.

@mikedidthis I guess my only problem with jQuery is this. It's too accessible, like what you said, it's just a shame that pople sometimes don't know how javascript works so they abuse jQuery.

@mikedidthis Me too, I started off with jQuery. I have NO problem with jQuery, it's great, honestly amazing... but i do have a problem with people persistently telling me to 'just use jQuery'. jQuery isnt right for every project.

JavaScript didn't get really interesting for me until I discovered HTML5 Canvas.... O.o game changer for me

I'm required to do a thesis for me to graduate next year... I was thinking of trying to pull off a rudimentary canvas mmo game.

@Terry problem with that stuff (for me) is there is so many parts to consider... and then you have to worry about your game.

the canvas api is minimal

I think I fell flat on my face

there is way too much overhead to deal with (unless you plan on using a framework or start trying to develop your own now... but good luck)

@Loktar (if you get this) - chime in here - how long did it take you to build your game engine, and how long (hrs) did it take you to make grapple hero (not even an advanced mmo)

the canvas api is minimal but in regards to an 8bit style mmo, i can see it working quite nicely, think snes link to the past... Server IO would be my major concern...

I haven't had time to learn canvas at all

that was just for the port.

I believe he used his own game engine (which if I recall took him some time - and trial and error to develop)

and he doesn't recommend others use it, there are better ones out there.

honestly. take a few stabs at some demos first.

but building a mmo is an enormous task. I'm not trying to discourage you from it, just trying to be realistic.

@rlemon canvas is on the same list as flexbox for me sadly, way over my head :D

you should definitely try to get some xp in it. It is still pretty infant, and it will become more and more a standard

@rlemon Canvas is awesome Im currently using it for some augmented reality stuff, controled with face-tracking.

now if you wanna get a job doing it - pick a good framework (maybe pay a little $$) and get really good with it - become an expert.

companies who use said framework will eat you up

it's in alpha right now, the face-tracking algorithm needs a lot of clean-up. I'm guggling a few projects but I think in about a month it wil be in a good place to chare with the world... i bookmarked ur site. When it's ready I would be more then happy to share :D

I'm going to be starting with it tomorrow and am canvasing for people who use it :P

I was trying to fix a big mistake in a modbus implementation

so it wasn't really working with node like other do

The employer I hung out with last week was like "alright, install node and write a crud app in an hour"

7 hours later - crud app complete LOL

They said they wanted to throw something ridiculous at me to see how I handled it

basically I'm using node to communicate via Angstrom linux (Beagle Board, like a rPI) with a QNX system via rs232 then produce a small webapp to control the QNX system

all via modbus RTU

I really want that job, but the only technology they use that I know well is jQuery.

I'm learning node, durandal and knockout for them
