@Marco Martin: Indeed you were right: even for Desktop apps, the Google Developers Console requires one to get his/her app verified, for only using the ubiquitous scope https://www.googleapis.com/auth/youtube. This is very new behavior; I tested it myself and got it confirmed by others to be factual.

@Marco Martin: Google only facilitated the older projects (those created before it imposing to API users this new requirement) to have Publishing status set to in production; this allows older credentials data (i.e. refresh tokens) -- those created before the new rule got introduced -- to not expire after 7 days.
