I've been playing around with some of these console calls and it looks like the issue is that the ajax call is sent but then there's a 500 Internal Server Error. How would that be possible since I'm just on my localhost 127.0.0.1:7000?

server error means something wrong at your server code
you will all see (error) inside your server logs..
check in vscode console
