@Rmano Looks great and I will be happy to try out in detail later. (In principle one could use the tikzmark techniques to find out in which math mode one is, i.e. if one is currently in a subscript, say.)

@Rmano The version I downloaded gave me still messages like DBG inner:none outer:red ARG2:, i.e. debug messages. If you have not already done so, you may want to turn them off on the CTAN version.
