Well, what I would do is this: if (url.indexOf('?') != -1) { url += "&videoplay=20"; } else { url += "?videoplay=20"; } It doesn't use a regex, and it handles the case where the url does not contain a query string already.

actually, there is an option

run flash in the browser. Have an encrypted key in the flash object

then have the page hash against that key before submitting ajax

that way the key can't easily be reversed from the flash, but you can still transfer it plain-text
