In the mean time, I am scratching my head here a bit regarding widget visibility on the start of the program via glade. If I uncheck the "Visible" widget flag, then that widget should not be visible unless I make it so, right? Doesn't seem to work though...

Ah. It has to be "gtk_widget_show_all(window);" in main that counteracts it.
