Q: How do I refactor this loop?

user3216060I've got an application where I use primitive arrays and Lists for a class called Item. These are used interchangeably for legacy reasons (I also wish this was just one type, but it's the way it is). Now I have to add a new method like this that works via a for-each loop: public void something(...

i would prefer not to use for-each for List , it doesn't work

Uhh, why wouldn't it work? The code I got right here works fine, it's just not nicely refactored.

@AndyTurner the question says that the OP wants to refactor it into a single method, your solution would still have two methods.

Wouldn't the only reason you have two methods to begin with is so that a method can accept a list or var params?
@MichaelCurry you can't do this in one method. And there's no reason to, just add an overload.
@MichaelCurry the OP says he wants to refactor the code so that there is only one method containing the loop which is achieved with Andy's suggestion. :)
i've answered it before , if you use for-each for working with List you will get java.util.ConcurrentModificationException error
@Ben Arnao: Yes, but the code WITHIN the methods are exactly the same, down to the space (and in my actual application this is significantly more code than just doStuff()). That's why I was asking.
@Mohsen_Fatemi you won't get that exception if you don't change the list itself - and this doesn't happen in the OP's code.

@Mohsen_Fatemi if you understand what the OP in that question is doing you'll see the difference: you get a ConcurrentModificationException if you modify the collection while iterating - as long as you don't modify the collection a for-each loop is just fine (otherwise it wouldn't have made sense to be introduced for collections at all).

my problem was with doStuff() method , if it was trying to modify the list the error happens
@user3216060 You could extract that method outside of those methods and call it within your something() methods to avoid writing it all twice
@Fildor i don't care about downvotes , this is some programmers opinion , he has an option to downvote , but when the code works well there is gonna be some problems with that programmer for downvoting a true solution :))
@Mohsen_Fatemi Fair enough. I've been revenge-downvoted, I know it happens. And yes, people do not retract downvotes after modification - I give you that. Doesn't change the fact that your statement here was plain wrong.

@Mohsen_Fatemi Ok, then. Just be assured that I was not trying to be rude or offensive. I just oppose the statement that "for-each does not work for List" ... And reading it again, the answer you linked actually explains why that statement is - ok let's say "not completely correct". But I am willing to stop that argument right here in order not to spam the question. We agree not to agree.

@Mohsen_Fatemi you have set up a straw man here by worrying about list modification. If OP were modifying the list, the existing methods wouldn't have worked.
@Mohsen_Fatemi That escalated quickly. I won't DV anyone! And the exact quote was "i would prefer not to use for-each for List , it doesn't work" - that's my whole point. You are beating a dead horse. OP is not modifying, obviously. But let's settle this now because you are in fact wasting your time trying to solve a problem that's not there.
