@DirkEddelbuettel What difference does it make to people typing stuff at the R prompt, apart from a speed increase with some operations?

Is that a trick question? Base R is obviously not changing semantics just because it changes internal representation.

@DirkEddelbuettel wasn't clear if this was a purely internal thing or an alternate vector class like data.table is an alternate class for data frames... but found the SVN now and the docs.

@Spacedman It provides a mechanism so that R vectors do not have to be SEXPs in RAM. So it's really hard to say what difference it will make, because a large part of that is up to how developers use the API.

@JoshuaUlrich yeah - I see they've rewritten mean, sd etc. Hmmm.
