@Puppy you make a good point. How do you choose one item from an infinite set with uniform probability. Is such an action even possible?

@Code-Apprentice No. If the set is infinite, the probability of choosing any given element is zero (not just close to zero--literally and actually zero).

@JerryCoffin Thing is, when they initially asked for my password I never stopped typing. Also they want me to confirm it by typing it a second time. That feels awkward.
 
@CaptainGiraffe "Never stopped typing"? That seems a little excessive. I did once joke about "please type in the full text of War and Peace (without typos) to continue", but that seems fairly minimal compared to not stopping at all.

@JerryCoffin I had no problem with the not stopping part. It was the type it again part that got me.
 
@CaptainGiraffe Fair enough--infinite input may be hard, but infinity times 2 really is much harder...

iostreams is not designed for efficiency. For specific use cases, you can't beat native implementation-specific file I/O. Or, in the worse case, take C's FILE *, and roll your own, hand-optimized hex conversion code. Couldn't beat that for efficiency. It's not rocket science. At least back in the days when I learned C and C++, this was a typical homework assignment: read hexadecimal, and convert it. — Sam Varshavchik 29 mins ago

@milleniumbug When designed, I think it was at least assumed that the overhead it imposed was low enough to treat it as zero. At that time, CPUs were getting drastically faster all the time, with no end in sight. Since then, CPU speeds have largely stalled, and disks have largely been replaced with SSDs, so I/O is drastically faster compared to CPU speed than it used to be.

@Code-Apprentice I don't think you can give a meaningful answer when the sets are actually infinite, but it's a constant 0.5 as N approaches infinity.
 
@JerryCoffin the normal distribution is over an infinite set, yes? And we can calculate P(a < X), for example.

@Code-Apprentice I meant only a meaningful answer to this specific question. But also, many things that seem to talk about characteristics of infinite sets really mean as the size approaches infinity. Otherwise, you constantly run into problems with division by zero and such.
 
yah, reasoning about infinite sets is surprisingly different than reasoning about large sets, or even the limit as finite sets grow larger.
my previous point is that the fact that the random variable X is infinite is not sufficient reason alone to conclude that there is no meaningful answer.
nor is the fact that the set of successes is infinite.
 
@Code-Apprentice No, but in this case you run into a fundamental problem: a set of half the items in an infinite set still has infinite cardinality, so the probability of choosing an even integer from the integers is inf/inf, to which there isn't much of a meaningful answer.

To clarify, I know cv request "tags" are convention in some places. I think that in principle they are problematic, because they tend to lead to bandwagoning as well as undue amplification of individual moderation/judgement (at a certain point the requests don't get the scrutiny they deserve because the poster is "trusted").
The rare occasions that a question situation is urgent, we make it a point to present that with proper arguments. The "cv-pls" convention actively tries to dodge that. If it really doesn't matter that much, there should be no harm in just waiting for the community on the main site to catch up.
