They've long since figured out that if you try to pick a single "reasonable" price and sell tickets that that price, you can't make any profit. At prices high enough to cover costs, you can't fill enough seats. You have to sell a lot of seats at or slightly below cost, and a few at exorbitant rates just to break even.

Hmm...counting things up on my fingers, I think that's more than the total number of jobs I've had in my life (though I guess it depends on whether you treat my time doing consulting as a single job, or count each contract as a separate job. In the latter case, it would be quite a few more than 12.

@MarkGarcia So far, I've been fired exactly once. I really wanted to resign, but couldn't so I pretty much intentionally got myself fired.

I suppose if you wanted to stretch a point, you could sort of say I got fired from the Air Force too. As a cost cutting measure, they passed a bill that said if I didn't re-enlist, I had to get out a little earlier than my original enlistment said. In my case, that only worked out to a few days early though--and if I'd been willing to re-enlist, they'd have been happy to keep me.

This didn't just apply to me though--everybody who was close to the end of their first or second enlistment at the time was affected.

As far as "forced" goes, it basically came down to this: it was part of the financial aid package for college. If I resigned from the job, I had to give back all the financial aid. By getting fired, I got re-assigned to a different job. That work wasn't really as good a fit for me, but at least I didn't have to work for her...

@MarkGarcia Yeah--didn't bother me a bit, especially since I was so close to getting out that it made almost no difference in when I got out anyway. It was a serious problem for a guy a worked with though. His wife (also in the Air Force) was pregnant, and scheduled to deliver just before being discharged--but was then told they had to re-enlist or get out six months early, well before the baby was born.

I honestly don't know what they did--I was gone before they'd made up their minds.

@JerryCoffin In the department I was working for in college (working there as a student), I only barely survived our boss by having a less demanding job (computer stuff). The others whose jobs are on keeping records gets shouted at almost everyday. I think half of us resigned while I was there.

She was not that mean though. Only very irritable.

@JerryCoffin Don't know your system there, but it must be terrible to have a baby while in service. Maybe she'd get a few months off, but still terrible.

@MarkGarcia This woman was downright nasty. The one that pissed me off was when two other students had arranged to swap shifts because one was going to go to a wedding--the boss shot that down and insisted that the girl work through her best friend's wedding. Afterward, I overheard the boss talking on the phone about it and laughing about how she'd ruined the girl's plans, and made it completely clear that she'd had no reason to do it except to be mean.

@aclarke If I were in that position today, I'd probably just find her boss's boss (or maybe just go directly to the college president) and try to get something done. Being ignorant kids none of us really had a good grasp of the fact that even though she was our boss, somebody else was her boss--and somebody else was their boss, and so on for quite a ways up. It's possible none of them would have done anything, but I'd guess somebody would.

Sad side of life is: thanks to the property/share market bubble, now my asset value went up by at least $150k in the past 3 years when my employment income is almost neglectable when I spent a good 5 years to save $90k on a way higher than average income. Isn't life a little b!tch?

$150k is a very very conservative estimate ...

Worked hard on my app business ... nope, don't see no big bucks ...

@MarkGarcia This was also a pretty small college, so we might have had to go all the way to the board of regents--but ultimately there's nearly always somebody in charge with whom that person has no "pull". If she had significant influence over highly placed people, she'd have had a better job than supervising students working in the library.

@JerryCoffin yup - if the uber-boss cares (and you'd sort-of expect a bit of care in a college) then that could have been good. I've stood up to a team-leader on behalf of a few young guys who didn't know they could say "no" to having work (installations and upgrades) scheduled all weekend, every weekend. A few big weekends happened due to circumstances, and then they sort of kept happening...
