but for some hash function, in the worst case very bad shit happens

plus, of course, O(1) doesn't cover the running time of the hash function, which is not always O(1).

@rightfold For a vector, resizing is done exponentially -- i.e., each time you resize, the new size is some factor larger than the old (e.g., 1.5 or 2x the previous size). Therefore, as it gets larger, resizing happens less and less often, so the total time spent resizing tends to a constant. With hash tables, they're basically assuming constant time lookup/insertion, so it's dealing only with resizing, which works pretty much the same way as for a vector.

@rightfold No -- the sizes of the strings are independent of the number of strings.

@DeadMG The normal assumption is that the average size of string is independent of the number of strings. Assuming (as is normal that) the average size of string remains constant, then the complexity of hashing one string is simply a constant when N is the number of strings.
