@sbi Of couse they're bullies: they have to justify their ridiculous salaries somehow. If they stop developers doing stuff, it can be seen that they're doing something apart from sitting around all day watching server/router statistics.

@Xeo I'm missing the point. I'd say it should work, as it appears to do on gcc. The only thing I can think of (this always gives me doubts) is how 'empty packs' are overloading. In fact, I had the following overloads earlier:

template <typename T> static std::vector<T> vec_matrix(T v, size_t n) {
    return { n, std::move(v) };
}
template <typename T, typename... Dim> static auto vec_matrix(T v, size_t n, size_t m, Dim... other)
    -> std::vector<decltype(vec_matrix(v, m, other...))> {
    return { n, vec_matrix(v, m, other...) };
}

^ But I edited and saw that it worked exactly the same (again, at least with gcc)

@sehe According to standard, an overload with Head and Head, Tail... is actually ambiguous (no matter how many elements Head is actually made of). The same is true for partial specializations

which is what all compilers implement

Else std::common_type as required by the standard wouldn't work. :) It's specified as template<class A, class B, class... Tail> struct common_type; and template<class A, class B> struct common_type<A,B>;

The problem lies with the fact that at the decltype point of the second overload, the compiler only knows that the first one exist (the second one is actually not declared yet). Can be fixed by putting both as statics in a class.

-- by the way, this is thrilling; I'm learning stuff here that will never be found in books. Even if it is in books it will be too implicit too pick it up (I remember seeing a phrase or two in C++TTCG that warns about visible overloads at template definition time) --

@Xeo Cool. I will turn it around. The extra 'sensing' size_t m param doesn't make a difference then, but it helps to move into class scope. Right?
