they are processed in that order, yet file 3 thinks it's cool to use file 1's definition

It is very annoying for the person being pinged, especially if they wear headphones. If the person is active in chat, it's better to just say "Adam, about this..." to get their attention. Leave the pinging for important messages or when you're not sure if the person is in the room so they'll see it later.
