@BenBolker I don't think you're missing anything easy and robust. Here is a "bug" report from 2002 from someone running into very much the same wall as you're facing. (And if I read the tea leaves correctly, that thread was the impetus for Thomas Lumley's very worthwhile "Standard nonstandard evaluation rules" (warning pdf), posted on the official R Developer page.)
