Now that you have edited the question and showed some effort I am glad to help you. If you don't need to support IE7 or lower you can use display:table-cell like this: #menu li { display:table-cell; width:1%; } Check this Fiddle Demo

I've followed the recommended php but I'm get an error "Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent" I can't seem to resolve it. The only code I have on the document is what I has been produced as an answer to my question.

@user2233286 if you are setting the header in php, you MUST do so before sending anything else back -> this includes whitespace in the file. MAKE SURE there is no spaces or line breaks before the <?php tag on the page you are setting the header on

echo statements send information as well.

so does print_r

var_dump

etc..

again, setting the header MUST be the first action to the page before you send any other data

Q: Can web pages be made future proof?

I understand that <!DOCTYPE html> makes the browser render the page in standards mode, but that does not prevent your page from breaking when say, HTML 6 comes out. Instead of making standards so generic, why don't they make it so that at the top of your page you explicitly specify the version ...
