They announced the metre as 1 / 40.000.000 of the circumference of the Earth. If you think about it, it's weird: Why that number? Why not 1 / 100.000.000 or 1/ 50.000.000? Well, 1 metre happens to be more or less 3 French pieds so people weren't confused
