I think I also had some issues installing gems with jruby. I will take a look and see how I managed to get around that.

actually when you install a gem for jruby you need to use jruby, it has it's own version of gem

if you look in the jruby/bin directory you will find a gem command, use that version of gem to install gems for jruby ... not all gems will work, jruby does not support C compiled gems
