does anyone have any material I can see on how they managed to successfully introduce the sliding menu drawer into Android?

and sorry by "how they", I mean how did Google successfully introduce it as a new UI element to users?

I remember everybody using the sliding menu by jfinkelstein before google released their own version

they had to because at one point everybody was already using it

I remember first seeing the concept on an iPhone

But I can't recall when I first saw it on an Android. But it's been a while already, and like Ahmad said, it existed even before Google made their own.

I have a cursor:

where getStuff has:
cursor.moveToFirst(); <--- this throws

but if i comment everything out and do
Cursor cursor = blahGetCursor();
cursor.moveToFirst(); <--- in the same function as blahGetCursor, doesn't throw?

@Ahmad sure, I thought that was the case. However if that is the case, how did that third party library get successfully pushed into existence?

I'm just intrigued as to how they managed to make sure users knew how to use it from the outset.

@edwoollard I guess you can answer that not only for the navigation drawer, but for every new widget or major UI change on mobile.

It's an UX question.

but that still is up to debate if users actually know what is behind the hamburger menu

so that still would't help with my personal transition.

right now we're seeing a reverse trend

I thought it was God's gift.

everybody is moving away from the hamburger menu and using tabs instead now

large menu that only takes up real estate when the user needs to access it.

wtf.

I was talking to one of the designers behind the wikipedia app and their lead android dev earlier

tabs were removed for a reason.

that's why google put the bottom tabs into the material design specs

after fighting it for years

the drawer is awful for most things
