hey, Im gonna make you guys think for a minute

say you have a list of words, hundreds of pre-defined words

and you don't have to use them all,

but you can't use any of them twice, no duplicates

and you want to create a crossword puzzle out of these words. and have it fit in a square. and not be all weird looking.

the generation of the puzzle does not have to be fast.

really it comes down to the approach, in my mind. Do you start off with a pre-defined set of words you're trying to cram together? Or do you just pick one word, and try to build off of it and accept any words that fit

it's also a really tough problem because unless you can create an entire grid (with no holes), there's no definitive way to say "yes, this is as small as the puzzle can get"
