I hear you, same I'm havinga small problem with android

@JoxTraex Ive got a simple app that sends two SMSs with a 30 second gap between, but using sleep(30000) hangs the UI, but creating another thread just ignores the sleep altogether.

did you remember to use handlers?

New to android, can you explain?

uh, its kinda tricky

i'll try

heres an example

this is creating a thread that is looking at the locationListener and periodically checking it

and the handler looks like this

by sending a message it sends a message however; for my application

I dont need it aside from incrementing a variable

the way it works.. is the thread checks the condition 15 times

each time the variable is null

it send a message to the handle to increment the count by 1

when my count hits fits in the handler which is be run through every time by the thread through the handler

it will eventually display the error message, which is simply a toast saying it timed out

basically Thread -> sends a message via a handler and you do what you will with it

got that?

dont understand where the handler comes into play

couldn't you increment in the for loop?

the handler is introduced to just send a message from your thread to your main thread

i didn't want to lock up the gui while waiting

just trying to set an alarm to a particular date and time

ahhh I messed around with the calendar gettings times, but never dates. I also didn't try setting alarms for them.

yeah, its definitely not easy

if I hardcode 2 mins into the app it'll launch in 2mins

but when I called the Calendar's .getTimeinMillis() it seems to fail

alarms.set(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP, c.getTimeInMillis(), pi);

first parameeter is the type of alarm, time to wait, and the intent to be fired

second parameter is : "Time the alarm should go off, using the appropriate clock (depending on the alarm type)."

and RTC_WAKEUP is based on "Alarm time in System.currentTimeMillis() (wall clock time in UTC), which will wake up the device when it goes off." whatever that means

so it just doesnt go off at all?

yeah, the date has to be way off or something

because like I said if I set the hardcoded 120,000 ms + currentTime(ms) it launches in 2m

the base for any time in an application is in ms

especially considering that the base of time for ANY computer system (apparently) is epoch time

self taught, doing a CS degree at uni and its holidays so I want to do something useful

iI think it has to do something with obtaining a message from the thread and passing it to the handler

You could put information into the handler.. I'm pretty sure so the message CAN change

just have the handler call a function like sendMessage(lols)

do you have sms working already between emulators?

its just the delay that fails to work

nice, I had trouble with that.. when I wasn't told that you had to have an internet connection for it to work

yes, atleast that is what I recall

they already receive the messages, so thats not the problem. The problem is getting the thread to sleep without sending the messages straight after each other

it would fail anytime internet was not detected on the emulators

nope, they are just refferences

my suggestion is start with Beginning Android 2 and then Android 2 Pro then Android 2 Professional

and if you want to get into some advanced stuff

then go with Pro android media developing graphics, music, video and rich media for tablets and smartphones

great book for the advanced stuff

u have 2 put condition if it is first button click then show results recieved from url and from next time onwards just make that webview visible and other 2 invisible.

thats wat i think u have 2 implement it practically........

@viv in my app i have 3 search engines..when Google is displayed Yahoo n Ask buttons r created...de al display the same result for the same query....if i click first time, it must show result....on next clicks it must show me that site's current view( Suppose I select one result from it)

I select result no2.(Google) Suppose I click ask, Ask displays "StackOverflow" results...with google n yahoo buttons...now whrn I click google...i must get result no2 and not SO results page...got it?

@viv It means I must get the selected result amongst the 10 displayed results...if i choose facebook home result, when i go to google i am go to log in page of fb...not fb results
