Hmm, I looked at sample - LabelingPolicyDemo.m, and mimic'd the label setup but the result was the same. However the sample is also wrong. The x title is a Helvetica bold font which each label references and yet they are all non-bold; they should be the same as the title no? It appears the label text style is fixed?
from the sample - each label references the axis title style which is bold:
axisNone.titleTextStyle = axisTitleTextStyle;
axisNone.titleOffset = titleOffset;
axisNone.majorTickLocations = majorTickLocations;
axisNone.minorTickLocations = minorTickLocations;

CPTMutableAxisLabelSet *newAxisLabels = [NSMutableSet set];
for ( NSUInteger i = 0; i <= 5; i++ ) {

Arrgh, the axis labelTextStyle needed to be set to nil otherwise it trumped (hmm odd use of that word:-) )the custom label text style!

One last question on this is available of a shadow perferable at label scope or perhaps wider then I'd opt for black? I might otherwise have to resort to black colored text.
