Apparently upgrading from 5.6 to 7.1 breaks special character output when running in CLI. Can't seem to figure out why.

I'm aware. The only thing I changed was my PHP version and update some function calls (ereg_replace to preg_replace, etc).

Now it's all broken. There's also a really bad freeze if I attempt to close the console that was never there before.

I'm quite confused and don't know why ZendGuard or ionCube loaders don't support PHP7 after a year it's been released. Has anyone have any idea why ?

They both support only PHP till 5.6

But none of those has support for PHP7 features

@Gordon they say "Encoding Language: PHP 5.6" so would be able to write PHP 5.6 code only and run it on PHP7 but that is not what I expect

Would it be hard to write an extension which allows simply for storing parsed AST nodes in an encoded file and loader which overloads default behaviour checking file type like magic numbers and load from encoded file ?

I use several, to draw boxes and progress bars and such. None of them work with chcp 437 or 65001 on 7.1.0.
