actually I figured it out but it's really messed up implementation (maybe?)

I just instantiated the viewmodel in the view

and called the method to return a value of string and set the string in my view to that string from the viewmodel

Is that a wrong approach?

I really should learn more about UI basics.

I mainly work on the backend stuff like zeroconf and NSUrlSession. Two other guys on my team have handled anything and everything UI related.
