@BenBolker there's about four things wrong with that, one of them being that ggplot messes up if you feed it something that is a data frame but isn't a data frame depending on who you ask.

@BenBolker oh crikes it used subset, which, and [ for a trifecta of redundancy. Why not throw a dplyr::filter in there too?

@Spacedman clueless but not hapless user. They knew they didn't need/weren't supposed to use $ within ggplot aesthetics but that was the only way they could get something to happen ... thanks.
