@PeterT Both Microsoft and Amazon have provided our group venue and occasionally food for our meet ups. Jaycar also allowed us to access their makerhub and provided snacks a few times.

It still costs me a bit (financially and time wise) for organising this group, I don't mind, it's not much anyways.

I enjoy it, also I have learned a lot, it's a lot cheaper than doing a university degree :D

This being said they "merely" do some kind of specialized consulting

They don't sell their own (software) product or whatsoever

I would however be extremely keen to know how they managed to be known and be considered good enough (with all due respect) to be allowed to provide their services to FAANGS.

I don't think it has to be that deep. It's not like FAANGs are magically efficient and wel organized.
They might just have started doing their thesis on the topic and made some contributions to the OSS project. Then someone in their OPSEC team was looking into hardening their Linux bootloader chain and looked into the coreboot mailing list and wrote to some contributors asking if they would do some consulting.

That sounds cheaper than trying to hit up the server hardware vendors for consulting

(especially if you don't want to fall prey to vendor lock-in )

@PeterT you make it sound as if they were very lucky. What are the chances of faangs randomly reeching out to you for consultancy?

I'd think these chances are close to none

it's a lot more likely when they end up using one of your tools for something and they need your direct assistance with it for something

@ratchetfreak Isn't it unlikely that they need the average joe's help? I mean I presume based on their compensation and elite interviewstyle that the very best software engineers work there
