I want to continue working, but I told myself I wouldn't

I find it extremely difficult to disconnect from work and say "my work day is over, I don't care"

I used to force this disconnect by leaving my macbook at the office, but now that it's at home with me 24/7 I'm always like yeah I can quickly implement this, read up on all the tickets, etc

oh man @tim that's super unhealthy

used to do this too and work past midnight some days

what if you divert that energy into some other side project?

I have no interest in a side project

I stopped doing that by simply not caring anymore haha, not sure how good that is

but you don't get paid for that!

my team is 2 :P currently 3 but usually 2

other full time guy is a fresh junior, requires a lot of guidance

and I am not a senior so half the time I'm just improvising this guidance

I enjoy teaching, but the more time I spend on teaching him, the more work piles up

I feel like then you have to be more realistic with your actual work, most of the tech leads at where I worked don't get too much actual development done, because mentoring is part of their actual work

I understand that is common practice in bigger teams

but if I don't build the features myself, they don't get built

at least while his training is not complete

and that's fine - that is not your responsibility; your responsibility is to deliver what can be delivered in a 40h week

if the work load is too much to get the features done + mentor then you need to hire more senior people, and that's where you have to push back to management

it is, and any time I make overtime it is fully voluntarily, don't get me wrong nobody forces me or expects me to do it

obviously this would be my stance if we lived in a perfect world

obviously I would agree :)

developers worth hiring are extremely scarce here, so we don't often get new colleagues

Every time I worked longer I felt like I had to because I wanted to keep the unrealistic deadlines I had set myself

despite knowing that I could have given a more accurate estimation

@Tim I thought ams is quite a good market for devs?

I have the same feeling, not because I set unrealistic deadlines for myself, but because I absolutely hate having to say some work is not done, even if it is not my fault. So on a regular basis I will put in extra effort to finish it anyway

the market for devs is good, because devs are scarce :D lol

I hate going into standup and saying, hey you know the bug I have been working on for the past week? a lot more complicated, still working on it

usually client will set a date where they want to have a new RC, and it's not so much that "X and Y must be in there" but more like "X must be in there and we would really really appreciate if Y is also done" and then I'm like yea I don't want to say Y is not done because of whatever reason so I'll just work until 3am to finish everything

and it makes people happy, and that motivates me to keep going

but my battery is draining and I have trouble slowing down

Well I had feedback on my thesis which I need to correct (it was more than expected..) which is the reason I locked myself in

Nobody, I'm here by myself it was affordable due to corona

but gotta admit I also used tinder a lot here

which is distractive

but it's such a good form of mental reset to lock yourself in a hotel far from home for 2 days

I can recommend that to anybody
