startActivityForResult should be passed an INT that is the resultcode

with that resultcode you differentiate

between any result sender

Guys, I wonder what is best approach for getting user input from a service? I know I cannot use startActivityForResult() from service and I need to use an intermediate activity. But now I can think of two different approaches. One approach is using an intermediate activity to run and get user input using another activity and return it to Service. Another approach is just showing an AlertDialog in intermediate activity and send user input back to Service. What do you think is better?

You can think of OTP as user input which need to be send to a Service.

@Raghunandan yea, Think of it like this. Service needs to get OTP from a user. I need to show a dialog and get OTP and send it back to service.

@MuratK. problem is that your activity itself may be closed but service is running. So binder is not usefull here.

if your service is running but there is no activity running then it makes no sense to require user input

@TimCastelijns yea, problem is somehow this, But I need to do it. Currently, I have set singleTop on my activity and when I need user input from service, I use startActivity() and send an extra via Intent to show that I need user input(OTP).

it is a old application (when there was no android), so porting it into android has a lot of irritating problems.

design wise you should not use dialogs and just put an edittext in the activity

Android Studio 3.1 is installing my app as soon as I tap run. And, changes are not effected in the app. Why isn't it building gradle anymore?
