@Ell Vertex Buffer Objects represent the actual geometry of the object, the Vertex Array Objects are the OGL equivalents of the DX input layout, with an addendum, they actually attach references to your VBOs, they "remember" as Nooble colorfully says. So when you bind a VAO, all of its dependent VBOs are also bound.

Look at that guys, I was right.

If you're not familiar with the input layout, it basically registers the vertex data format which is up to you. With DirectX, it is directly validated against your vertex shader's bytecode (something that OGL doesn't do directly).

@ElimGarak The remembering is an important point. Usually you bind/ubind stuff. But in the case of VAOs you wanna bind the vao, bind buffers, unbind the vao but not the buffers.

Yes, at least as far as the user of the API is concerned. The vertex data format and how to source the vertex data (VBOs in modern apps).
