We had another interesting do-it-yourself road case in the Netherlands. Basically the person on the ground floor didn't want cars to be parked on the official, legal spot in front of his window, so he painted a No-Parking-Allowed cross on it. The upstairs neighbour saw that, and parked there anyway.

The neighbour got fined for parking off-limits and fought the fine in court. What happened: the judge upheld the fine, because you need to respect the traffic regulations, even if you're sure that they've been put there by a private party. Otherwise it'd demolish trust in the entire road signage.

I actually looked up the laws out of curiosity and chains on tires aren't outright illegal.. they're allowed "in periodic instances, but not continual use". No idea how they would even monitor that, that's probably why it's colloquially known that they are illegal and they aren't sold anywhere

I don't really personally think they're necessary outside of the frozen tundra though

if my FWD Toyota Yaris with no winter tires can survive a Canadian winter I feel like all the people in 4WD trucks and AWD SUVs should be fine

The seismic equivalent was 5.8 moment magnitude, I read somewhere, which probably won't be above the noise level at our distance. The Swiss Seismological Survey did pick it up though

@flawr that looks like a transverse wave, whereas a pressure wave is different. I don't think you can have a shockwave in anti-phase. Question is what the atmospheric boundary is like at the edge of the pancake.
