@AnderBiguri so have a more or less explicit solution apart from one parameter which will probably need to be optimized numerically for this projection
at least in 2d

just had some paper laying around when I had to wait for my computer to finish:)
 
so, what did you exactl found? a solution to map only area preserving DVFs?
 
so let's say we have a rectangular equidistant grid of points and a displacement vector for each of these points
if we apply that vector to each of these points our grid will be distorted
so every square will be deformed to some arbitrary quadrilateral
now what I tried to do is find a different displacement field, that is as close as possible to the original (in my case L2-close) while preserving the area of the quadrilaterals
it boiled down to optimizing a quadratic term (the closeness) subject to a bilinear constraint (area-preserved-ness)
 
So your approach would be, first find a DVF, then find a new DVF such that its similar to the first, but with area preserving features?

but I have no idea what happens in practice, as it is only an L2-notion
but the other Ls are a pain to work with:)
or maybe these norms aren't suitable for this problem to begin with, who knows
 
for the real life, this has the following problems:
1) maybe your original DVF is VERY contracted in some point, so this exapnsion may explode to the rest of the image
2)you want to be somehow locally area preserving, but its more complicated. Organs do contract/expand, so the area preserving should happen at mid scale, not small scale. In fact, perhaps more, you'd want to include the value of the scalar field, as very locally, something can contract, but its some sort of area*scalarfield that is preserved, not just area
talking about PET or CT
but I think L2 is good

I did some actual computations for just one square (4 points) but one point in my argument I think is not so straightforward to generalize to larger grids. I guess I have to think again about that
