I have a feeling this is an X11 thing. What happens when you call ggplot()? I think it constructs some svg's and then punts it to the backend. But finding documentation on it is not easy.

@Jaap I've been using it and I've found the docs a few times, it's not an emacs problem from what I can tell, I have the same problem from a terminal.
