Managed to move houses over the weekend... both houses are still a mess though.

Does anyone know a good reference for substitute(...())? It's basically impossible to search for this with google and it doesn't seem to be covered explicitly by the usual documentation.

@zx8754 It assigns different values rather than modifying the original which could be a bit misleading (x[x != 0] <- NA Vs x[x != 0] <- x[x != 0] * n)

Also, could be generic error target, OPs question is not how to do it, but how to deal with error

@Tensibai yeah, i think so too, in most cases. Florian does not seem receptive to that notion, similar to the points @smci has made on other high-traffic posts. personally, i don't think learning the right R object name is anything to be proud of, just a nuisance/friction one must deal with using any tool. (eg, if someone asks about a "categorical" var, i sure wouldn't overwrite with "factor", since both terms are correct even though only one exists in R's internal lingo... ditto filter/select)
