I'm tentatively sure that that is a real thing

Like when you open an Excel file and it makes its own temporary files in the same directory. I've corrupted a few memory sticks in my time and I'm gonna blame it on that

Either way, I do actually always "safely remove" the drive and I'll wait if some virus scanner stops me... until I lose patience. Maybe it's superstition or learning from painful lessons
