seems like making a fully transparent octagon with this approach is possible but not a semi transparent one (it produced an interesting effect) - codepen.io/hari_shanx/pen/YXXWvR

because ~I wanted to have a slide, whilst still being able to 'click' under the combo box (i.e. if another form element was below), i couldn't click since the divs would be opacity:0 and hence would just end up clicking them, instead?
@jbutler483 if you make it like @Harry says with a wrapper, you can transition the height of the wrapper with overflow:hidden; and still allow interactions with the below elements when the dropdown is closed

If I use pixel values the edge radius is always a circular arc even if the value is greater the largest side of the element. When I use percentages, the edge radius is elliptic and starts in the middle of each side of the element resulting in an oval shape :

@web-tiki yh since you examples kind of show that % does this and px does this while they can both do what the other does. only % is a different type of length.
@Persijn I don't think it would be relevant to the question. The main thing is to understand that percentage is relative to the element's size wether the other units are independent of that size. or rather they don't use it the same way
or maybe you are right, I should specify how you can get the same result with both units it would help understand how they work
