I need your opinion: so I want to write a Rust lib to do X. There is already exactly one Rust lib that does X. But all the code is pre-1.0. And X is not too complicated, so I can probably write the library in a few hours. Additionally, I want to match the interface of a type in std. Question now is: trying to fix/update the old crate or just create a new one?

@LukasKalbertodt That looks old and unmaintained. I'd say don't take unnecessary risks, those improvements might never hit the crate.

And of course, if the crate is used by others, I get all the fame :P

Not a matter of fame, but of value. If you can do better, people will use that.

Although under different circumstances, I had to make that decision with dicom-rs. Before that, there was an incomplete piece of a project that I figured it couldn't go far. And it didn't, that repository is gone as we speak.

Well, I guess I write it anew then. It's more fun anyway :3

true, but that means you first have to figure out how to compile a Rust program in 32 bit

heck, you can run 16-bit applications on 64-bit Windows, IIRC
