I just wanted to share an idea with you and see what you think.

On Twitter you mentioned "building a stock market app, that functions on human emotional changes that produces a best prediction."

I'd had a somewhat similar idea that used news articles as a way to try and produce predictions.

Since market news can often shift a stock price, it would be interesting to see how far in advance you can predict a change.

Is that the kind of thing you had in mind?

I've got to get back to my wife.

Let me know if that idea sounds like something you'd be interested in working on, or if you had another idea.

Ok, cool.

We'll need to start with lots of stock data.

We should probably limit the number of stocks to just those in the NASDAQ or the S&P 500, just so it doesn't become an overwhelming amount of data.

I think once we get the data, we should look for days when a stock moves more than a certain %, then search news sources to see if we can find articles that were published before the price change.

Then we can look for similar articles to see if they can be used to predict changes.

Let me know if you have a language preference. I've been trying to get better at Python, so that's what I was thinking of using.

I have an idea of how we can download data from Yahoo Finance.

I too decided to get my hands dirty with python, I used to be a javascript enthusiast .. but now I decided to use python as my main programming preference

I already attended two job interviews(on feb 15th) both interviews were based on my python knowledge .. I still consider myself as a novice in python, though I worked with few modules in it .. still need to dig a lot! :D

That happens to me all the time.

Most interviewers just want to know that you understand the important concepts. Details are less important, as long as you know how to find them.

I used to do programming for fun, but now I wanna look for a job based on my programming skills, actually I was trying for IIT(my brother is from IIT and he's my inspiration), last year I got 5,116th rank out of 2.25 lakhs students who attended the paper, although I applied for Gate 2014, now I lost the interest in IIT(I need to secure a rank below 500) .. I felt that I'm wasting my valuable time.. so now I decided to look for a job

Yes, I've only dabbled in it a little. Not enough to get the example code.

The ML course starts again on March 3rd.

It looks like there are legal restrictions to using Yahoo Finance data for financial gain.

I guess this will have to be for research purposes only.

Or we can find another data source.

It's a pretty wide variety. Every time I see a need I write it down. Sometimes I'll research it later and find it already exists, but I still think I can make it better.

BountyBot was one of those ideas.

I'd also like to make a script that finds broken links on Stack Overflow.

Using news articles to predict stocks was one of those ideas. :)

My son wants me to work on an Android game idea too.
